MODULA ist eine Edition aus Musik und Parfum, die auf der einen Seite den zeitlichen Aspekt der ästhetischen Erfahrung ausdehnt und die Schichtung von Komposition sinnlich erfahrbar macht. Auf der anderen Seite ist MODULA die Einladung zu einer synästhetischen Erfahrung insofern, dass hier bewusst zwei Sinneswahrnehmungen miteinander verknüpft werden – Duft und Klang.
Ton, Note, Thema, Komposition, Harmonie oder Akkord sind Begriffe, die sowohl in der Musik wie im Sprechen über Parfüm vorkommen. Duft und Klang begegnen sich auf der Ebene der atmosphärischen Stimulanzien, und mit beiden lässt sich eine Stimmung erzeugen oder unterstreichen. Duft und Klang haben darüber hinaus die Analogie von Intensität (und ihrer Variation) sowie Zeitlichkeit, und hierdurch den möglichen Aufbau in Akkorden.
Im Parfumhandwerk wird eine Duftkomposition in der Regel aus drei Akkorden unter-schiedlicher Flüchtigkeit hergestellt: einer Kopf-, Herz- und Basisnote, die dann in einem individuellen Verhältnis zu einem komplexen Parfum übereinandergeschichtet werden.
Klänge und vor allem Düfte sind aber auch stark mit bestimmten oder unbestimmten Erinnerungen verbunden, sie sprechen das limbische System an – den Teil des Gehirns, das für Emotion, Erinnerung, Motivation, Stressempfindung, und Hormonbalance zuständig ist. Somit können Klänge und Duftmoleküle innerhalb weniger Sekunden ihre Wirkung auf unsere Stimmung, Psyche und Geist entfalten.
Aus der Forschung bekannt ist, dass limbische Regionen bei harmonischen Klängen das Glückshormon Dopamin ausschütten. Ähnlich direkt auf das Gehirn wirken ätherische Öle.
MODULA is an edition of music and perfume, which on the one hand extends the temporal aspect of aesthetic experience and makes the layering of composition sensually tangible. On the other hand, MODULA is an invitation to a synesthetic experience insofar as two sensory perceptions are deliberately linked here – scent and sound.
Tone, note, theme, composition, harmony or chord are terms that occur both in music and in speaking about perfume. Scent and sound meet on the level of atmospheric stimulants, and both can be used to create, or underscore a mood. Scent and sound also have the analogy of intensity (and its variation) as well as temporality, and through this the possible construction in chords.
In the perfume craft, a fragrance composition is usually made of three chords of different volatility: a top, heart and base note, which are then layered on top of each other in an individual ratio to create a complex perfume.
However, sounds and especially fragrances are also strongly associated with specific or indeterminate memories; they appeal to the limbic system – the part of the brain responsible for emotion, memorie, motivation, stress perception, and hormone balance. Thus, sounds and scent molecules can have their effect on our mood, psyche and mind within a few seconds.
It is known from research that limbic regions release the happiness hormone dopamine in the presence of harmonious sounds. Essential oils have a similar direct effect on the brain.
Im Gegensatz zu synthetischen Duftstoffen, die oft gesundheitsschädigende Wirkungen haben, bestehen natürliche Essenzen aus äußerst komplexen molekularen Verbindungen, die eine vielfältige und tiefgreifende positive Wirkung auf alle menschlichen Körpersysteme haben können. Viele ätherische Öle wirken außerdem adaptogen, also ausgleichend im Körper (anregend bei Schwäche, beruhigend bei Anspannung). Insbesondere die Psychoaromatherapie setzt hier an. Natürliche Essenzen reagieren zudem synergistisch miteinander und verstärken und ergänzen sich in ihrer Wirkung, eine Mischung ist potentiell mehrfach wirksamer als ein einzelnes Öl.
Für die Arbeit MODULA haben Paul Michael von Ganski und Anneli Käsmayr eine Komposition/Mix(tur) in Duft und Klang erarbeitet – ein Album aus Klangstücken, in denen drei verschiedene Modularsynthesizer unterschiedlich betont zur Verwendung kommen und ein natürliches modulares Parfum in drei Akkorden. Martin Wilmes entwickelte dazu eine skulpturale Gestaltung der Parfumflaschen aus Holz.
In den Audiostücken steht jeweils einer der drei Modularsynthesizer lfo, vco und vcf im Vordergrund. In der Edition befindet sich ein Download-Code, um die Stücke herunter zu laden.
Das Verhältnis der drei Duftnoten zueinander bleibt der Betrachter*in überlassen. Die Akkorde können nacheinander in ein eigenes Mischungsverhältnis auf die Haut aufgetragen werden.
Die Parfumakkorde sind ohne synthetisch hergestellte oder isolierte Duftstoffe ausschließlich auf Basis von natürlichen, ätherischen Essenzen komponiert, die vorwiegend in Wasserdampfdestillation gewonnen wurden. Damit entfalten die enthaltenen ätherischen Öle über die Haut auch ihre psychoaromatherapeutische Wirkung. Die Akkorde sind an klassische, zeitlose und geschlechterneutrale Parfumnoten von Leder, Tabak oder Harz angelehnt, die dem Duft eine tiefe und organische Note verleihen. Die ätherischen Öle von Harzen, Nadeln, Hölzern, Saaten, Wurzeln, Pilzen und Moos mit einem Hauch Blüten wirken erdend und beruhigend auf Körper und Geist. Der natürliche Ursprung der ätherischen Öle lässt sich auch an den unterschiedlichen Farben der Akkorde erkennen, die von milchig-weiß bis braun reichen. Die ätherischen Essenzen sind in Jojobawachs gelöst, das besonders stabil ist und hochwertige hautpflegende Eigenschaften hat. Durch das Mischungsverhältnis der drei Akkorde auf der Haut lässt sich ein individuelles Dufterlebnis erzeugen, das mehr oder weniger floral, holzig oder ledrig ist.
Ähnlich wie der Klang über die Zeit ein Verstummen in sich hat, verschwindet auch der Duft mit zunehmender Zeit.
Unlike synthetic fragrances, which often have adverse health effects, natural essences are made up of extremely complex molecular compounds that can have a diverse and profound positive effect on all human body systems. Many essential oils also have adaptogenic, or balancing, effects in the body (stimulating when weak, calming when tense). Especially the psychoaromatherapy starts here. Natural essences also react synergistically with each other and strengthen and complement each other in their effect, a mixture is potentially several times more effective than a single oil.
For the work MODULA, Paul Michael von Ganski and Anneli Käsmayr developed a composition/mix(tur) in scent and sound – an album of sound pieces that each feature one of three modular synthesizers and a corresponding natural perfume in three chords. Martin Wilmes developed a sculptural design for the perfume bottles made of wood.
The audio pieces each focus on one of the three modular synthesizers lfo, vco and vcf. The edition includes a download code for the tracks.
The relation of the three scent compositions is left up to the viewer. The chords can be applied to the skin one after the other in a custom mixing ratio.
The perfume chords are composed without synthetically produced or isolated fragrances exclusively on the basis of natural essential essences obtained mainly by steam distillation. Thus, the essential oils contained also unfold their psychoaromatherapeutic effects through the skin. The chords are based on classic, timeless and gender-neutral perfume notes of leather, tobacco or resin, which give the fragrance a deep and organic note. The essential oils of resins, needles, woods, seeds, roots, mushrooms and moss with a touch of flowers have a grounding and calming effect on the body and mind. The natural origin of the essential oils can also be seen in the different colors of the chords, which range from milky white to brown. The essential essences are dissolved in jojoba wax, which is particularly stable and has high-quality skin-care properties. By mixing the three chords on the skin, an individual fragrance experience can be created that is more or less floral, woody or leathery.
Similar to the way sound has a silencing in it over time, fragrance also disappears over time.
